The ancient hamlet of Fonterutoli, is the center of all the family’s activities since 1435, from the winemaking to the hospitality. At that time Madonna Smeralda Mazzei managed the Locanda Fonterutoli in an incredible modern way. Other famous ancestors of the Mazzei Family marked the history of the Chianti Classico, for example Ser Lapo Mazzei, considered the father of Chianti Classico, used for the first time the expression “Wine from Chianti” in an official document (1398), and Philip Mazzei, who inspired the cornerstones of the American Declaration of Independence to his good friend Thomas Jefferson, who also invited Philip to import viticulture to Virgina.

Owned by Marchesi Mazzei since 1435, Castello di Fonterutoli became a leader in the Italian wine world thanks to the extraordinary vocation of its land. Vineyards extend for 117 hectares (289 acres) on 5 vineyard sites, with altitudes ranging from 200 mt (650 ft) to 500 mt (1,640 ft) above sea level.

The very particular micro-climate and the soil structure, extremely rich, rocky texture, are valorized by an extreme viticulture, with very-high-density vineyards and very limited yields (no more than 800 gr per vine), and also by an attentive vinification, completely without the use of pumps.

The particular attention to preserve the unique characteristics of each vine creates elegant, powerful and complex wines, with a unique personality: a great expression of an unsurpassable terroir.
