Description

It all began with Rubesco, the iconic label of the Cantine Lungarotti winery, whose name derives from the Latin “rubescere”, to blush. Since then, by roughly calculating the number of bottles produced and average consumption, our Rubesco has brought a blush to 120 million wine lovers, twice the population of Italy and 20 thousand times that of Torgiano, its birthplace, located in the province of Perugia.

Today the Umbrian group, guided by Chiara Lungarotti (C.E.O.) and her sister Teresa Severini, produces 2.4 million bottles annually of 25 different wines exported to 50 countries worldwide from 250 hectares of vineyards (between the Torgiano estate and the more recent one in Montefalco). In 2013 Lungarotti's wine “assets” reached an overall turnover of over 11 million Euros. Exports also grew, with an average growth in turnover of more than 70% in Japan and Russia.

These numbers have established Cantine Lungarotti as a true testimonial for the Umbrian land because of their integrated promotional system, of which they were forerunners, and its complete production ...

Wine museum on site

With a collection of more than 3,000 works, the Museo del Vino di Torgiano (MUVIT) tells the story of viticulture in the Mediterranean in an unprecedented manner. Reviewed as the “best in Italy” by the New York Times (2010), the Museum is a journey over five thousand years through collections of wine vessels, cups, jugs, amphoras, a noteworthy collection of ceramics, as well as ethnographic collections.

The Museum headquarters located in Palazzo Graziani-Baglioni also house one of the largest collections in Europe of engravings on a Bacchic theme, among which is an inebriating Bacchanalia by Pablo Picasso (1959), and of wafer irons. The museum also displays vinification equipment, including is the monumental press described by Caton and used in the Umbrian countryside until just a few decades ago. Opened to the public in 1974, the Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2014 with a year of special events and initiatives, as well as a MUVIT EDITION wine label dedicated to one of its iconic pieces, the Plate with Satyr by Jean Cocteau, enamel on terracotta, Paris, 1958.

Guided tours to MUVIT and MOO are available by appointment in English, French, Italian, German and Russian.

These numbers have established Cantine Lungarotti as a true testimonial for the Umbrian land because of their integrated promotional system, of which they were forerunners, and its complete production cycle, from the agricultural exploitation (olive oil and balsamic condiment) but above all, unique cultural and tourist activities. A case in point is the Lungarotti Foundation curated by the founder’s wife, Maria Grazia, who created the Museo del Vino di Torgiano-MUVIT of Torgiano (Perugia), the “best in Italy” (New York Times, Ed., 2010), which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2014, and the Olive and Oil Museum-MOO. The museums are the culmination of years of research on the millenium-old presence of these two products, the quintessence of the Mediterranean. Hospitality is represented by Le Tre Vaselle – a luxury Resort with a unique Vinotherapy Spa – and by the 12 independent apartments of Agriturismo Poggio alle Vigne.
